Ledbury Mews North
Bartha_contemporary is pleased to announce Belinda Cadbury’s first solo-exhibition at the gallery following her partnered exhibition with Takashi Suzuki in 2008. Please join us for the opening on 11th January from 6-8 PM to celebrate Cadbury’s long-standing relationship with Bartha_contemporary. The show will continue until 11th February by appointment.
The exhibition features a collection of Cadbury’s more recent works, investigating the deliberate precision of geometric forms on a large scale. Cadbury designs her work of vertical lines exclusively out of graphite on paper. All pieces are created by hand with extraordinary patience, with rudimentary supports of a ruler and rubber. The show reveals the boundless possibilities between graphite and paper, highlighting Cadbury’s delicate mastery of shade and tone.
Cadbury explores varying shades of pure graphite and the adaptability of a simple pencil. Immense sheets of paper are mounted on boards and stretch across the entire principal gallery wall. Cadbury’s composition of sharp parallel lines thus spans the viewer’s entire line of sight, creating an immersive viewing experience of pure abstraction.
Cadbury has experimented with figurative sculpture and smaller-scale drawings during her artistic formation. Her acclaimed work has been shown internationally, including at the US’s Cleveland Drawing Biennial in 1989, Japan’s Noborimachi Art Space in 2009 and most recently, in a large-scale solo-exhibition at MUWA in Graz, Austria in 2022.
This solo-exhibition celebrates Cadbury’s meticulous dexterity, the geometry of abstraction, the hypnotic nature of large-scale drawings and the everyday quality yet versatile materiality of pencil and paper.
